For emotion we use Ekman’s 6 basic emotions, dividing responses into six emotions: anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness and surprise.

How the science works...

You will commonly hear reference to the Facial Action Coding System developed by Paul Ekman which is the starting point for most facial expression detection systems. Our system uses a deep learning approach that is trained on the six basic emotions. We measure the intensity of expression for each individual emotion over time. So a person could display a mixture of fear and anger, for example, and to varying degrees from minor to significant.
